Biographical Note

Frederick Thomas Mygatt (1811-1853) was the artist of the song book, which is considered to be part of the New England fraktur tradition. Philip M. Isaacson donated the song book in 1980 upon its inclusion in an exhibition that he curated titled Records of Passage (Feb. 12-May 10, 1981). The acquisition was noted in the Fall 1981 issue of The Clarion, and the exhibition essay and checklist were published in the Winter 1981 issue. A lawyer in Lewiston, Maine, Isaacson also had an arts column in the Portland Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram for nearly fifty years, beginning in 1964.
