Biographical / Historical
Deborah Goldsmith Throop, born Deborah Goldsmith (1808), had an uncommon career for women of her era. During the 1820s, she worked as a professional painter in her hometown of Brookfield, New York, painting primarily portraits of friends and family. She stopped painting professionally upon her marriage to George Addison Throop, whom she met during a portrait session. Deborah died in 1836 at the young age of twenty-eight, leaving behind two children, Cordelia (Throop) Cole and James Addison Throop.
Since her death, Deborah’s works were maintained and passed down to various members of the Goldsmith Throop family, including the following family members referenced in this collection: Olive Cole Smith, daughter of Cordelia Throop Cole and granddaughter of Deborah Goldsmith Throop; Dan Addison Throop, son of Addison James Throop and great-grandson of Deborah Goldsmith Throop; Dan Throop Smith, son of Olive Cole Smith and great-grandson of Deborah Goldsmith Throop; and Martha V. Smith, wife of Dan Throop Smith.
