 File — Box: 48, Folder: 12
Identifier: Sub-Series B

Scope and Contents

From the Series:

The series consists of materials relating to Darger’s personal dealings and documents his varied relations with a limited circle of friends, church administrators, social service administrators, and work-related associates. Correspondence includes a letter received from his parish priest in response to Darger’s concern over the dress code of women attending mass, and a letter in response to a query regarding the treatment of children wishing to receive Holy Communion at mass. Correspondence also includes some work-related letters of recommendation for Darger. The series contains a small collection (three folders) of certificates custom made by Darger for the Black Brothers Lodge, the Society of Black Brothers, and the Gemini Society.

Financial records include pay stubs, bank account books, miscellaneous receipts, and insurance policy certificates. The series also contains a collection of various handwritten notes, and note fragments, some of which contain details related to story lines in the manuscripts.

Religious material in the series includes several clippings of religious imagery, some of which Darger had drawn on in graphite (e.g., coloring in the eyes on religious portraiture), a collection of prayer cards, prayer booklets, parish bulletins, and a small collection of scapulars.
