Scope and Contents
This recording features an interview with Dr. Raymond E. Bellamy (b, 1940), grandson of artist Dr. Raymond Flavius Bellamy (1885-1970), conducted by Sarah Margolis-Pineo.
Margolis-Pineo speaks to Bellamy from the campus of Florida State University, where Dr. Raymond Flavius Bellamy taught from 1918 until 1956 (although during most of this period the school was called Florida State College for Women).Dr. Bellamy was a polymath, teaching courses in economics and statistics, history, political science, zoology, anthropology, biology, and chemistry. This conversation discusses his career as an educator and mentor for women in the sciences. As well, Dr. Bellamy delves into his grandfather’s extracurricular interests, including his prodigious writing, cultural satire, political leanings, faith-based activities, athletic abilities, and award-winning jams and jellies.
Highlighted is Dr. Bellamy’s creative practice in fiber, which led to the posthumous acquisition of a collection of his quilts by the American Folk Art Museum. Dr. Bellamy addresses how his grandfather came to quilting as a pastime and unpacks his process and the meaning behind Dr. Bellamy’s illustrative motifs.
